Air brush
Does any1 know from where i could get a good airbrush not for an expensive price?? model shops are kinda overpriced....

antoinepsaila- 01-10-2007

I think model shop also sells cheap airbrushes. Try also at K hobbies Fgura and there is also another hobby shop at San Gwann. Remember the cheaper it is, the quality will be. If you've just started modelling go ahead and buy a cheap one but if you wish to obtain very good results I'll recommend you that you'll wait a little bit and buy a good airbrush. Take a look also at ebay. There are lots of airbrushes for sale and they are also cheap.

No im not new, iv been modelling for the past 7 yrs :) But im sick and tired of using the brush! i want to get an airbrush to improve and do things i cannot do with a brush. Do you still suggest i buy a cheap one? if its cheap...what bad results to a cheapish airbrush give?

AdrianGambin- 01-10-2007

What is this shop in san gwann called?? cos i live there....

antoinepsaila- 01-11-2007

I can't remember it's name axactly but i think its name is just hobby shop. well I have a very cheap airbrush and an expensive one. The difference is large. With the expensive one I could make fine lines, something that with the other one is impossible. For camoflauge you even don't need to mask. You can also spray in detail. You have much better control over the airflow and paint flow. With my cheap one I cannot control any of them. You have also to consider your budget cause prices vary a lot. There are airbrushes which costs Lm7.00, others Lm70 and there are also Lm200 airbrushes. I used to paint with the brush also. I turned to airbrush just a year ago. The results are great and very realistic especially on modern jet fighters. I modelled a red arrow some 5 years ago and i painted it using the brush. Now I made another one and I painted it with the airbrush. The difference is quite significant and the colour matches like the real one. The gloss varnish also comes out very good when using the airbrush. Not same results when applying it via the paintbrush.

Well i need an airbrush for- camouflages, 1 tone camouflages, matt/gloss cote coatings- (especially). Not nesecarily for lined camouflages, i made a MC 202 this summer with green spinace camouflage ontop of a sand colour and it came great! i have a very steady hand  If i had to buy an airbrush, a good one, with brush and compressor, how much will it come to?? Yeah i HATE painting with glossy paints! i also hate using white! im sure u no what i mean...

antoinepsaila- 01-11-2007

if you want a silent compressor they are very expensive like lm200. Non- silent are about lm40. An airbrush that costs lm70 is a very good one.

AdrianGambin- 01-11-2007

Can you give me the direction where this hobby shop is in sag gwann?? LM200!....nah ill go for the lm40 one. Besides an airbrush, compressor, thinner and paints, what else do you need? i dont understand much in airbrushes hehe...

antoinepsaila- 01-11-2007

it is near the valley. well you need thinner for paint thinning (i use white spirit) and also an airbrushspray for cleaning. It is a must that you clean your airbrush very well if you want to enjoy it for a long time. You need also a pipe with waterfilter. These are the main equipment . you need also a lot of practice!!!! Try some practice on an old model. Don't forget also to buy masking tape. Remember that with an airbrush you don't have control over the paint as you have with a paintbrush. Badger and Paasche are the most popular brands for airbrushes.

AdrianGambin- 01-13-2007

Its just the cleaning that i dont understand how to do. it worries me! Are gravity airbrushes more expensive then suction airbrushes? Does this shop in san gwann sell airbrushes? Where do u suggest the best place i could get an airbrush from is? as in a good price...

antoinepsaila- 01-13-2007

Well the shop if i'm not going wrong sells the paasche airbrush. I prefer the gravity feed airbrush. Even me airbrush cleaning used to preoccupying me a lot. Even today that I cleaned my airbrush several times sometimes I will not be certain that I cleaned it enough. An airbrush have lots of very tiny passages that air and paint must pass through. If these passages are blocked by dried paint or something your airbrush will not function very well or not function at all. When I clean my airbrush i use to spray a lot of thinner for several times so that I clean away the unused paint from the reservoir. Then i spray in the reservoir. The spray cleans three times as much as the thinner. It is much stronger and you have to handle it with care. If you don't have experience you better call an adult to make it for you cause you can easily irritate your skin with it as had happened to me. Mine was more serious as i even touched my eyes. Then I totally disassamble my airbrush so that i could clean every part of my airbrush well and separatley. You must take a lot of care when doing this, first so that you won't lose anything and second that you don't damage anything especially not bending the needle. Do not do this alone the first time. Ask your shop from where you are going to buy it to do it for you for the first time. My airbrush is a Badger 100LG. It is a very good airbrush. I bought it from The Model Shop and it has also a one year guarantee. It costs me Lm70. people who use paasche also says that they are good but I never used paasche.

AdrianGambin- 01-13-2007

Aah....sounds like alot of work and thinner! Ill go out and purchase an airbrush and compressor when iv time. Now this lm70 airbrush, does it spray large clouds of paint? or a small steady flow? i want one that sprays evenly, that can be used for an overall colour or camouflages and not stay having to mask everywhere because the paint flies everywhere. You no what i mean? Dont worry about skin irritation, my skin seems to be ammune to all paints, thinners, glues, never got any irritation Thankx for your help!

antoinepsaila- 01-14-2007

Well I can tell you that it is a very good airbrush and it has a fine point so you are not going to spill everywhere. You can also change your point to medium. It paints in deatil and it can also make a very fine line. You have ultimate control onthe paint and air flow. I paint everything with it from the interior of the cokpit to the whole fuselage of the aircraft. It's a very good choice.
