Cargo planes told to skip Malta.. - Malta Independent 230308 Cargo planes told to skip Malta as aviation fuel stocks very low
At least two cargo services which used to land regularly in Malta have been told by authorities in Malta to stop coming to Malta until the aviation fuel situation returns to normal, sources in the aviation sector told The Malta Independent on Sunday.
The cargo services used to fly regularly to Malta until around mid-week last week. One service used a jumbo jet, from Thai Airlines, which flew from Tel Aviv to Malta and on to Lagos, while the other used two Illyushin planes.
An Enemalta statement issued late on Thursday tersely contradicted a story, which appeared on that day’s l-orizzont, that aviation fuel stocks were running low, but the carefully-worded denial only said there is enough aviation fuel for ‘scheduled services’ but cautiously did not mention cargo flights.
Basically, sources told this paper, there is just about enough fuel for Air Malta planes. Other airlines get their fuel from their home airports or airports en route. One such airline, Emirates, refuelled at its Larnaca stopover last week.
The Enemalta statement said the corporation has no problem with supplying fuel to scheduled flights that leave from Malta.
It added the corporation always forward plans its fuel distribution. It added, in words that may sound alarming to those not connected to the sector, that the next fuel consignment arrives on Tuesday but will only be available for use on 4 April, after it is checked.
Sources in the sector indicated to this paper there could also be more than meets the eye and that certain hiccups could well have a political meaning. Calls for a thorough investigation were also made.
Messages to Enemalta’s press officer were unanswered by the time we went to print.
