Germanwings to offer 4 weekly flights
Germanwings, Germany's major low-cost airline, will start operations to Malta next March, Malta International Airport said yesterday. The German airline will operate two weekly flights from Cologne and another two flights a week from Stuttgart, on Tuesday and on Saturday. MIA said that through the new German link, Maltese travellers will have more options, at considerably low fares. Besides the introduction of two new regions in Germany, passengers will also be able to purchase tickets to destinations such as Edinburgh, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo and St Petersburg, all of which are served by Germanwings via their Cologne base. Likewise, the new routes will serve to attract more German tourists. MIA said Germanwings has confirmed operations throughout the summer season 2007 until the end of October with plans to run an all-year-round operation subsequently. The airline sells seats exclusively online, through its website www.germanwings.com and, as from last September 1, it started selling seats to and from Malta at prices starting from €19 one-way, excluding taxes. Germanwings carried more than 5.5 million passengers last year, an increase of 57 per cent on 2004. It has set itself a significant target of at least 7.5 million passengers for this year, an increase of 36 per cent. The airline registered a turnover of almost €400 million, an increase of 62 per cent compared to 2004.
