ISO settings Hey All,
just was wondering to what ISO settings you use. I Use 100 when its very bright sun. When its gloomy i use 200-400 ISO with some Bracketing Compensation. What about you guys?
All the Best!

Hey Luke. Ive been playing with ISO settings too. I tend to use 100 if its really bright, but generally leave it at 200 on an average day. I have had to use 400-800 recently with the weather being a little gloomy.. but images became quite grainy, and after USM in PS... well.. no photos on JP's this time!!
I dont know if my ISO is correct.. but hey practice makes perfect!

I only use ISO 200-400 depending on weather sicne my camera doesn't have ISO 100

Keep the ISO to the lowest available for as long as possible. Go higher only if necessary to stop the shutter speed from going too low and/or your aperture from going too wide (many lenses produce soft images at wide apertures). But above 200 grain will become a problem. If the light is too low for ISO 200 it's really time to call it a day.
Merry Xmas everyone! Just a few mins to go now ...

Happy Xmas, and thanks!

Charles said it all ! Try NOT to go above 100 except in emergencies !! Even at 200 you start noticing the difference, even if small. If even with 200 you cannot work, go for an ice cream !

Yeah have to agree! And thanks for putting my mind at rest.. I always thought 1600 was a tad high really!!! hehe... now off to find that ice cream!!

You're being a bit pessimistic guys, ISO 320 sometimes works for me... after all, are you shooting pics for yourself or for jetphotos.net?
We might be losing the plot of our hobby here...
I wouldn't mind shooting at ISO 1600 if need be, as long as I get a shot of the plane.

I think the title for this thread should be ' The Best ISO Setting for JP and Airliners :D
AaronB- 12-27-2006
heheheh well yes... I suppose it should be... surly we wouldn't just be trying to take shots to get them into Jp's and Airliners would we??? (guilty as charged your honour). Actually being serious.. I try and get good shots of aircraft as a photographer, not to impress Jp's.. but Jp's accepting a few is a bonus and recognition of our hard work in my opinion :-) There wouldnt be ISO 1600 for no reason.. but again as photographers, we all have different methods. If it works then it works I guess :-)

Hehe reminds me of someone on an airliners.net discussion forum who, in reply to a similar point, said "But shooting for a.net is my hobby!"
If the light has faded so much that even ISO200 is not viable you're in the no-man's-land between day and night photography -- a time of day when photos will turn out so dull and wishy-washy (never mind the grain) that unless the subject is super-rare I wouldn't even keep them for my personal collection. But like Aaron says -- to each his own ...

But during the night you won't go for an ice-cream..... You'd better opt for something more while watching those aircraft taking off ... ;)
MarkZerafaGilson- 12-27-2006
oh no... I would go back to ISO 200, and take out the tripod!
alancordina- 12-28-2006
50 - 50 for me. Its true that we take photos primarily for ourselves and our collection, and only after that, should jp.net or any other come into the frame, but for me, and that is just an opinion, if it is not an aircraft that I will never see in my life again, above 200 ISO wilth all that grain, noise, and other things, I don't even keep it for myself, so I'll just watch it.
