Ryanair to let Air Malta fly from Bologna by Paul Cachia, di-ve news (pcachia@di-ve.com) ...it will operate to Venice GUDJA, Malta (di-ve news)--September 18, 2007 -- 2030CEST--An agreement has been reached between the National carrier Air Malta and low cost carrier Ryanair over the Bologna route. Television Malta reported that the deal came after hours of negotiations and intervention by the Maltese government. Ryanair and Air Malta expressed their interest to add the Bologna route to their itinerary which Meridiana has just dropped. Media reports suggested that if Ryanair did not conclude on the route -- Malta -- Bologna -- Malta -- that it needed, the carrier would dump four new routes, namely Stockholm, Bremen, Girona and Valencia. Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech confirmed to the State Television during talks with the government, the two airlines agreed that Air Malta would operate the Bologna route whereas the Irish carrier would take the Venice route. Air Malta has started operating to Venice last month. It is not being excluded that the national airline will submit a proposal to operate the Venice route following a call for submissions launched by government on Tuesday. The Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna is the third most important international airport in Italy linked to London, Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt and Brussels amongst others. It is expected that this agreement will be announced tomorrow by Ryanair's chief operating officer Michael Cawley that will be in Malta to address a press conference.
