That's an awesome video! ...And some great flying, too. Thanks for sharing.
Here's a short clip from my first F16 ride:

Not at the moment...but I'm getting there. Lucky I am, but believe me, luck alone won't even get you close.

About the video: When you click on that link, a download window (Open/ Save/ Cancel) should pop up. Perhaps if you have IE7, it's blocking the popup window?!
About the RDAF: The Air Force has been looking at 3 aircraft as replacement for the F16, which will take place around year 2017. The contestants are Typhoon, Gripen and Lightning II.
Typhoon has pulled out of the competition very recently so now the competition is between the remaining two. Lightning II has been the favorite but Saab came with a very attractive offer this week. The offer includes 48 aircraft, pilot training and support for 20 years, so Lockheed Martin are now under serious pressure.
Anyway, our F16's are currently being upgraded to M4 (4th MLU stage) and will continue up to M8. At M4 the jets get the HMD (helmet mounted display) and Aim9X. With the above mentioned, the pilot can simply look at the aircraft beside him, lock and fire...so the "old school get-behind-the-other-guy" days are over. Denmark is the only country apart from the US currently operating the 9X, so that's really great. We also have the JDAM and Laser/GPS guided GBU which has been tested a month ago during Red Flag exercise in Nevada. The RDAF F16's also have many other features developed by Danish companies which are unlike other F16's and therefore put them at the technological forefront. One of them is a voice warning system, where the pilot hears a voice from the same angle that the threat is coming from.

I hope they dont choose that ugly Lightning II. i hate these 'futurtistic' wiered looking planes. Did you see that video post i posted of the f16 at full after burner in the general section? its Danish..
GEA- 01-25-2008
I agree that the Lightning II is the ugly one of the batch. Typhoon is the prettiest in my opinion, followed by the Gripen and JSF is actually ugly. But anyway, there's other things in fighters than good looks.
I saw that engine test video. It's a Norwegian F16 - not Danish.

Mixed up the names lol! dxx :? Typhoon aint bad.... but the F16 beats all sexy aircraft, F-4 too!

Yes, the F16 has very smooth and fine lines - beautiful from every angle. It looks great and handles like a dream.

Does the helmet-mounted display amount to putting the HUD on the visor? I wonder how the helmet senses which way the pilot is looking - and whether there is a lag between the pilot turning his head and the display adjusting accordingly.
Seems to me that with helmet-mounted displays and the new generation of missiles, the days of dogfighting are drawing to a close. Who gets in the first shot will get the kill. In future it will be all about knowing where the enemy is (meaning AWACS and datalinks) and having missiles that outrange the enemy's. What do you think GEA?
